Rejane Maria de Oliveira

WHRD, National Coordinator
CoNAQ

Rejane Maria de Oliveira is a Brazilian woman human rights defender and leader of the Quilombo Maria Joaquina, located in the municipality of Cabo Frio. She is a Black woman, serving as national coordinator of CoNAQ. She is also a socio-environmental educator working on environmental education projects, related to the environmental licensing of oil and gas.

The Quilombo historically originated at the slave ship port of Ponta do Pai Vitório, in the municipality of Armação dos Búzios. It was certified by the Palmares Foundation in 2010. Maria Joaquina has a strong female leadership presence, with women leading the daily workings of community relationships and leadership development. They are at the forefront of agricultural production, entrepreneurship, organisational processes, cultural care, and knowledge, inspired by leaders from their ancestry—women who fought through a long process of resistance and survival.
