Karla Guevara

Karla Guevara is a trans feminist and woman human rights defender. She is the Executive Director of Asociación Colectivo Alejandría and the General Secretary of the LGBTI Salvadoran Federation.

In 2015, along with other LGBTI activists, she fought for reform in the Criminal Code that now typifies crimes motivated by hatred towards sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2018, they promoted an initiative towards a Gender Identity Law and in 2019, they submitted a change of gender claim for four trans women before family courts, since there was not a gender identity law.

In 2022, she changed her name and gender before the First Family Court, becoming the first trans woman in El Salvador to achieve this. Unfortunately, she has not been able to change her official documents due to the Municipality of San Salvador not giving her access to her birth certificate.
