The Front Line Defenders Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of the organization and has adopted a number of policies and codes or practice which are set out below. The Board has adopted a Handbook which sets out roles and responsibilities for members of the Board as well as the Audit Sub-Committee. The Handbook also sets out in more detail the division of responsibilities between the Board and staff via the Executive Director.
The Front Line Defenders Board of Trustees formally agreed on 28 June 2013 to subscribe to the Dochas Code on Corporate Governance and is an Associate Member of Dóchas – The Irish Association of Non-Governmental Development Organisations. The Board of Trustees now considers that Front Line Defenders is fully compliant with the Dochas Code.
Front Line Defenders has adopted policies and standards with regard to external audit, financial transparency, conflict of interest and privacy.
In 2019 Front Line Defenders signed on to the Dochas Safeguarding Code.
Front Line Defenders recognises that the Safeguarding Policy does not encompass the full range of existing and potential cases involving individuals who are not staff, board members, consultants and/or volunteers, but who are connected to FLD in other ways – HRDs we have supported or currently support. In 2020, we developed guidelines on responding to cases of sexual harassment, summary of which is provided below.
As a charity seeking donations from the public, Front Line Defenders aims to comply with the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public, as laid out by the Irish Charities Regulator. Read our Donor Charter.
