Barry Ahmed Newton

Barry Ahmed Newton is a journalist and co-founder of the investigative newspaper ‘L'Évènement’ (The Event), a newspaper known for its work promoting good governance and democracy. As a journalist, Barry advocates for the defence of freedom of expression and the defence of human rights in Burkina Faso to ensure that all journalists and activists can express their opinions without fear of reprisal. From 2016 to 2021, he was appointed as President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). In November 2020, he organized Burkina Faso's second democratic election, with reforms to make the cost of elections sustainable and to enable the creation of a modern, inclusive electoral database, guaranteeing elections that reflect the will of the population.
