Jimena García Merino

WHRD, Founder
Honduras Resurge movement

Jimena García Merino is a woman human rights defender that works in the promotion of democracy, the defence of national sovereignty, the strengthening of the justice system and women’s rights in Honduras. She is founder of the Honduras Resurge movement in which she promoted, along with other organisations and civil society movements, the derogation of the Employment and Economic Development Zones (ZEDE), which nevertheless continue to operate.

Jimena follows up on cases of gender-based violence and advocates for the installation of the International Commission against Impunity in Honduras (CICIH).

Human rights defenders in Honduras suffer extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment as well as judicial harassment, threats and stigmatisation. Journalists, lawyers, prosecutors, those defending the rights of women, children, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community, indigenous and Afro-Honduran communities, and those working on environmental and land rights issues are particularly at risk.
