Rights Georgia
Rights Georgia, formerly known as Article 42 of the Constitution, is one of the oldest and most internationally recognized non-governmental organizations in Georgia dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, freedom and the rule of law. Founded in 1997, the mission of Rights Georgia includes advocating for the harmonization of legislation with global human rights norms, providing legal assistance to vulnerable groups and (including representation in court), and supporting the work of human rights defenders. The organization plays an important role in educating communities regarding their rights, empowering people to take legal action against injustices, and advocating for political reforms and international law standards.
Human rights defenders in Georgia are often subjected to physical attacks, threats and insults, defamation, and slander. In most cases, these forms of intimidation are levelled against those who protect and promote the rights of migrants and members of national, religious, or sexual minorities, as well as those working on politically sensitive cases and in remote areas where they have almost no opportunities for protection.
