Human Rights Center

The Center for Human Rights (CHR) is a well-known non-governmental organization in Georgia, founded in 1996 with the aim of protecting and promoting human rights and the rule of law, as well as achieving sustainable peace and democracy in the country. The main activities of the organization include monitoring and documenting human rights violations, providing free legal assistance to individuals and groups to protect their rights and freedoms at the national and regional/international levels, advocating for legislative and policy reforms, and raising public awareness. In addition, the Human Rights Center actively supports freedom of expression and media/journalists by promoting independent media and implementing capacity building projects. The organization also operates a website documenting human rights violations, development and advocacy in Georgia.

Human rights defenders in Georgia are often subjected to physical attacks, threats and insults, defamation, and slander. In most cases, these forms of intimidation are levelled against those who protect and promote the rights of migrants and members of national, religious, or sexual minorities, as well as those working on politically sensitive cases and in remote areas where they have almost no opportunities for protection.
