Liang Taiping is a Hunan-based poet and human rights defender who has campaigned for the release of fellow HRDs and in support of the Occupy Central protests which swept Hong Kong in 2014 and a result of which he got fired from his job.

Human rights defenders in China work in an extremely hostile environment and under President Xi Jinping they have seen the space in which to operate further restricted. Furthermore, defenders must operate under very restrictive legislation and vaguely worded laws are selectively enforced to punish HRDs.
