Wong Yan Ke
Wong Yan Ke is a human rights defender and f Deputy Chairperson at BERSIH – The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, a consortium of NGOs dedicated to advocating for electoral and institutional reforms in Malaysia. He served as a Case and Campaign Coordinator at Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), where he advocated for police accountability and reform, the right to a fair trial, anti-torture measures, and freedom of expression and assembly.
As a student activist, Wong Yan Ke protested against the racist remarks made by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya during his own convocation. Consequently, he was unfairly charged and found guilty of ‘’intentionally insulting’’ the Vice-Chancellor and attendees, knowing that it would ‘’disturb public peace’’.
Due to his active engagement in civil society and participation in street protests, Wong Yan Ke has faced repeated harassment, been subjected to police investigations, and received death threats from unidentified individuals.
