Scovia Arinaitwe
Scovia Arinaitwe is a human rights defender, trainer and Rapid Response Coordinator for Solidarity Uganda. Solidarity Uganda is a NGO focused on nonviolent strategy, movement building and social change by working with vulnerable communities to build their capacity to achieve peace and justice, which has included working with communities to protect their land from multinational corporations. As a trainer for Solidarity Uganda, Scovia Arinaitwe conducts training partnered with Rhize which is a global network that trains, coaches and partners with leaders of social movements to help them deepen and scale their impact.
The Ugandan government continues to limit freedom of expression and association with human rights defenders being subjected to threats, intimidation and judicial harassment due to their legitimate human rights work. A number of human rights organisations have reported break-ins at their offices. Particularly at risk are human rights defenders advocating for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people.
