Lae-goon Park
Lae-goon Park is a steering committee member of the People’s Committee for the Sewol Ferry Tragedy and steering committee member of the Coalition 4.16 on the Sewol Ferry Disaster. This Coalition was established on 18 March 2015 in solidarity with the Sewol victims’ families. The members of the Coalition 4.16 organised a series of protests to commemorate the Sewol victims, calling for an independent and transparent investigation. In 2009 Lae-goon Park was also detained during protests in support of families of the victims of the 2009 Yongsan incident.
South Korea has a generally vibrant and strong civil society, yet concerns persist about undue restrictions placed on the legitimate right to freely associate of certain groups of defenders, in particular those working for labour rights and for the rights of migrant workers.
