Case History: Murad Magomedov
On 4 February 2015, human rights lawyer Mr Murad Magomedov was physically assaulted by five unknown men in Makhachkala, Dagestan. He is currently hospitalised.
Murad Magomedov is a lawyer of Human Rights Centre “Memorial” in the Republic of Dagestan. In particular, he represents victims of a large-scale “special operation” performed by the police and military forces in Vremenny village of Dagestan in September 2014. Throughout the security operation, journalists and independent observers, including human rights defenders, were denied access to the village, and witnesses reported abuses against residents.

Murad Magomedov was assaulted and severely beaten near the Supreme Court of Dagestan, where he had been representing a client earlier that day. Due to the multiple head injuries and shock suffered by the human rights defender, he does not recall all the circumstances of the attack. Murad Magomedov is currently being treated at the Republican clinical hospital for a concussion, multiple fractures of the jaw, and broken teeth, which means he has difficulty speaking.
Mr Murad Magomedov has previously received threats in connection with his work as a human rights lawyer. In addition, Human Rights Centre “Memorial” has been subjected to a defamation campaign and judicial harassment due to its involvement in the investigations into the alleged human rights violations committed in Dagestan by the police and military.
