Appeal hearing held without Nahid Khodajou present, initial verdict upheld
On 16 April 2020 Nahid Khodajou was verbally informed that the appeals court had held a hearing of her appeal without the presence of her lawyer or the defender herself, and had upheld the initial verdict.
Nahid Khodajou is a labour rights worker form the Kurdistan Province in Iran and has been engaged in human rights work and political activism since the 1980s. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Free Union of Iranian Workers and was heavily involved in the organization of the campaign to raise the minimum wage in Iran in 2011.
On 1 May 2019, Nahid Khodajou was arrested during Labour Day demonstrations in the capital and was released on bail on 3 June 2019. The labour rights defender was sentenced on 10 October 2019 by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to six years’ imprisonment and 74 lashes. She was sentenced on charges of “acting against national security by gathering and planning” and “offence against public order”, in connection with her participation in Labour Day demonstrations.
