About the HRD

Ahmed Douma is a prominent Egyptian human rights defender, poet, and writer who became a symbol of resistance during the 2011 uprising. His activism began in 2009, when he was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to one year in prison by a military court for joining a peaceful solidarity mission to Gaza. He was arbitrarily detained in 2013 under Egypt’s repressive protest law, subjected to torture, denied medical care, and held in solitary confinement for four years. In 2015, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison following an unfair trial, a verdict upheld in 2020 despite international condemnation. Though released under a presidential pardon in August 2023, he remains under a travel ban and faces ongoing judicial harassment and surveillance aimed at silencing his activism.

On 16 July 2026, the Fifth Settlement Appellate Misdemeanour Court, in Cairo, upheld the one-year prison sentence against writer, poet, and human rights defender Ahmed Douma, ultimately rejecting his appeal against the judgment issued on 3 June 2026.

Ahmed Douma is a prominent Egyptian human rights defender, poet, and writer who became widely known for his activism during the 2011 uprising. His human rights work began prior to 2011, and he has been repeatedly targeted by the authorities, including through arbitrary detention, torture, denial of medical care, prolonged solitary confinement, and imprisonment following proceedings widely criticised as unfair. He was released under a presidential pardon in August 2023 after spending more than ten years in prison as a result of his peaceful exercise of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Since his release, he remained subjected to travel ban and ongoing judicial harassment, including repeated summonses for questioning as retaliation for his writings and peaceful human rights work.

On 3 June 2026, Ahmed Douma was sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted for publishing "false news and rumours inside and outside the country that would disturb public order." These allegations are associated with an opinion article, published in Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, in which the human rights defender criticised the use of political imprisonment, as well as a series of Facebook posts criticising detention conditions, including the use of floodlights in prisons around the clock.

On 6 April 2026, Ahmed Douma appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution after being summoned for questionning about his writings. The prosecution ordered his detention pending investigation, and the human rights defender has remained in detention since that date.

Front Line Defenders expresses grave concern regarding the decision to uphold Ahmed Douma's prison sentence and the continued judicial harassment against him. The organisation believes that the prosecution, conviction and continued detention of Ahmed Douma are solely in retaliation for his legitimate and peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of expression and his human rights work.

Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Egypt to immediately and unconditionally release Ahmed Douma, quash his conviction, drop all charges against him, and end all forms of judicial harassment against the human rights defender.

Appeal hearing scheduled for detained writer and human rights defender Ahmed Douma

On 16 July 2026, the Fifth Settlement Appellate Misdemeanour Court is expected to issue its judgment regarding the appeal submitted by human rights defender, writer and poet Ahmed Douma. This appeal challenges the one-year prison sentence he received on 3 June 2026.

He was released under a presidential pardon in August 2023 after spending more than ten years in prison in connection with his peaceful exercise of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Since his release, he has remained subject to a travel ban and ongoing judicial harassment, including repeated summonses for questioning in relation to his writings and peaceful human rights work.

Ahmed Douma was sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of publishing "false news and rumours inside and outside the country that would disturb public order." The charges relate to an opinion article published in Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, entitled "From a Prison Within the State to a State Within the Prison," in which the human rights defender criticised the use of political imprisonment. Additionally, these charges relate to a social media post addressing the detention conditions in Egyptian prisons. During the proceedings, the court reportedly rejected several requests submitted by the defence, including requests to hear defence witnesses and inspect prison conditions.

On 6 April 2026, Ahmed Douma appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution after responding to a summons for questioning regarding his writings. The prosecution ordered his detention pending investigation, and the human rights defender has remained in detention since that date. On 17 April 2026, the Advisory Chamber for Misdemeanours in Badr and El Shorouk extended his detention for an additional 15 days pending further investigations.

Front Line Defenders expresses grave concern regarding the continued detention and judicial harassment of Ahmed Douma. The organisaton believes that the criminal proceedings against the human rights defender are solely related to his legitimate and peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of expression and his human rights work.

Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Egypt to immediately and unconditionally release Ahmed Douma, drop all charges against him, cease all forms of judicial harassment, and ensure that he can carry out his legitimate human rights work without fear of reprisals.

Detention of poet and human rights defender Ahmed Douma extended for 15 days

On 9 April 2026, the Advisory Chamber for Misdemeanours in Badr and El Shorouk ordered the extension of the detention of writer, poet, and human rights defender Ahmed Douma for a further 15 days pending investigations on charges of ‘spreading false news.’

On 6 April 2026, Ahmed Douma complied with a summons from the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) to attend a questioning. The SSSP ordered his detention for four days pending investigations. The human rights defender was summoned after publishing a post on his social media page and an opinion piece on the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed website ‘A Prison Within the State and a State Within the Prison.’

At a hearing on 9 April 2026, the Advisory Chamber for Misdemeanours extended the human rights defender’s detention by 15 days. The hearing was held via video conference, during which Ahmed Douma appeared seated next to a police officer. The defence requested clarification of the prosecution’s grounds for continued detention, which were based on alleged risks of absconding, evidence tampering, and harm to public order. The defence contested these claims, stressing that the case concerns a publication, for which detention is generally not warranted. Under the Constitution, detention related to publications is limited to specific offences, such as incitement to violence, discrimination, and defamation, which do not apply in this case.

The defence noted that Ahmed Douma has stable residences, has previously complied with summonses, and has acknowledged publishing the opinion piece. They also criticised the lack of access to the complaints filed against him and pointed out that other, more serious cases have seen defendants released. They concluded by highlighting the discrepancy between official statements asserting that pre-trial detention should be exceptional, and its application in practice. Ahmed Douma reiterated that he has not published false news, but highlighted past violations against him and that he was denied necessary medication in custody.

Front Line Defenders expresses grave concern over the ongoing detention of Ahmed Douma, and the continuous judicial harassment he has been subjected to. The organisation believes that the targeting and harassment of Ahmed Douma by the authorities in Egypt is a direct retaliation for his legitimate and peaceful human rights work.

Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Egypt to immediately release Ahmed Douma, drop all charges against him, and cease all forms of judicial harassment.

Though released under a presidential pardon in August 2023, he remains under a travel ban and faces ongoing judicial harassment and surveillance aimed at silencing his activism.

On 2 April 2026, Ahmed Douma received a summons from the SSSP to attend a questioning on 6 April 2026 in connection with Case No. 2449 of 2026, registered with the SSSP. The summons was delivered to his family home in Damanhur, and Ahmed Douma appeared at the SSSP Office on the appointed day, accompanied by his legal team. The human rights defender was summoned after publishing a post on his social media page and an opinion piece on the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed website ‘A Prison Within the State and a State Within the Prison.’ On the evening of 6 April 2026, following the questioning, Ahmed Douma was detained under an order from the SSSP.

Since Ahmed Douma was pardoned in August 2023, the SSSP has opened six cases against him and summoned him for questioning six times, including the summons on 6 April 2026. The cases against him primarily relate to his social media publications. However, his writings and published opinions are important contributions to defending human rights and clearly fall within his right to freedom of expression. He has shared, among others, his experiences in detention, aimed at drawing the authorities’ attention to these violations, triggering investigations, and taking measures to put an end to torture and ill-treatment in prisons. His publications are reports on human rights violations, and should not serve as grounds for prosecution. The latest case occurred in January 2026, when he was detained for over 12 hours and subjected to ill-treatment, including being blindfolded, restrained, assaulted, and denied basic necessities. His personal belongings and electronic devices were confiscated without proper documentation.

Several months ago, the SSSP announced a seventh case against Ahmed Douma. However, he has not been summoned for questioning on this case yet. He is accused of publishing false news, statements, and rumours both inside and outside the country, as well as misusing social media.

After past detentions, Ahmed Douma has been released on bail. Between November 2024 and January 2026, the total bail he has paid amounts to approximately €3,700 (230,000 Egyptian Pounds), pending the outcome of current detention.

In addition to the judicial harassment and detention, Ahmed Douma has been placed under a travel ban and he cannot obtain official documents, preventing him from securing permanent employment.

Front Line Defenders expresses grave concern over the arrest and detention of Ahmed Douma, and the continuous judicial harassment he has been subjected to. The organisation believes that the targeting and harassment of Ahmed Douma by the authorities in Egypt is a direct retaliation for his legitimate and peaceful human rights work.

Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in Egypt to:

  1. Immediately release Ahmed Douma;
  2. Drop all charges against Ahmed Douma and cease all forms of judicial harassment;
  3. Lift the travel ban against Ahmed Douma;
  4. Guarantee that all human rights defenders in Egypt can carry out their work without the fear of reprisals and free from all restrictions.
