    On 16 March 2016, human rights defender Mr Igor Kalyapin, head of the Joint Mobile Group (JMG), was attacked by a group of approximately 15 unidentified masked men during a visit to Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic. On the previous day, the office of  the JMG in Grozny was raided by the police. Front Line Defenders urges the Russian authorities to carry out an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the attack on Igor Kalyapin and raid on the office of Joint Mobile Group

    On 18 October 2017, Evdokiya Romanova was found guilty of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships among minors using the Internet” and fined 50,000 roubles. The accusations against her are related to articles and links that she shared on social media in 2015 and 2016.

    On 5 September 2016, the Shali District Court of Chechnya sentenced human rights defender Mr Zhalaudi Geriev to three years imprisonment on charges of drug possession. Zhalaudi Geriev is a human rights defender and independent journalist who works for the online news portal Caucasian Knot, a Russian media portal covering current developments in the Caucasus and well known for its reporting on abuses by Chechen authorities.

    On 2 September 2016, six members of the human rights organisation Voice of Beslan were found guilty by the Pravoberezhniy Region Court of committing an administrative offence, and sentenced to either twenty hours of correctional labour or a 260 Euros fine.

    In recent weeks – that have been dominated by challenging and difficult news – it has been great to see Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason take up Ireland’s seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC), and for her to be already promoting an agenda around women, peace and security.

    Ireland starts its two-year term at a time when the international rules-based system has never been under greater threat.

    Oyub Titiev in court

    Last week I attended the court hearings on case of Oyub Titiev, the head of the Human Rights Center Memorial branch in Grozny who was absurdly charged with drug possession. I first met Oyub Titiev in 2009 after our common beloved colleague Natalya Estemirova had been abducted and assassinated.

    On 22 September 2016, human rights defenders Svetlana Gannushkina (Russian Federation) and Mozn Hassan (Egypt) were awarded The Right Livelihood Award. The other two recipients were The White Helmets (a volunteer rescue group in Syria) and Turkey's independent "Cumhuriyet" newspaper.
