On 25 October, land rights defender Noel Castillo Aguilar was killed in the community of Barra de la Cruz in the municipality of Santiago Astata, Oaxaca. Noel Castillo Aguilar is the fifth member of the organisation CODEDI to be killed in 2018.
On 28 July 2018, the body of indigenous leader and woman human rights defender Juana Raymundo was found on the road near Nebaj and Acambalam Village, Guatemala. According to the Farmers’ Development Committee (Comité de Desarrollo Campesino – CODECA), her body showed signs of torture.
At approximately 9:00 am on 9 May 2018, human rights defender Luis Arturo Marroquín was killed when leaving a local bookshop in San Luís Jilotepéque. Two hooded men had followed him from Jalapa to San Luís Jilotepéque. From a black Toyota Hilux truck, the perpetrators shot the defender in the back several times
On 2 May 2018, human rights defender Hugo Albeiro George Pérez was shot and killed by an unknown individual, while he was participating in a peaceful protest to oppose the impact of Hidroituango Hydroelectric Project in Colombia’s Antioquia Department. The human rights defender’s nephew, Domar Egidio Zapata George, was also killed in the attack.
On 19 April 2018, Olivia Arévalo Lomas, a woman human rights defender and spiritual leader of the Shipibo-Konibo indigenous peoples, was killed by unknown assailants just a few feet from her home in the community of 'Victoria Gracia', in Coronel Portillo Province, Ucayalí, Peru. The defender was shot in the chest and died instantly. Her body was left on the street in full view of her local community.
On 10 April 2018, human rights lawyer Carlos Hernández was killed by unidentified assailants at his office in Tela municipality, Atlántida, Honduras.
On 19 March 2018, Silvio Duban Ortiz Ortiz and Javier Bernardo Cuero Ortiz, sons of human rights defender, Bernardo Cuero Bravo, were killed by unknown individuals in Barrio Independencia Ferrocarril Avenue of Tumaco Municipality, Nariño.
On 7 June 2017, their father, Bernardo Cuero Bravo was killed at his home in Malambo, Atlántico province. He was shot four times in front of his wife and died instantly.
