Sütsuin Jieyuu Wayúu/Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu
The human rights organization Sütsuin Jieyuu Wayúu or Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu (Force of Wayuu Women) was created in 2006 with the aim of visibilising and denouncing violations of the rights of the Wayúu indigenous people, which are a result of the mining mega-projects, forced displacement, the situation of vulnerability of the victims of the armed conflict and the presence of armed groups and the militarization of the Guajira territory. The Wayuu women have been historically organised in defence of their land, environment and self-determination. Collectively, they are responsible for denouncing a number of human rights violations committed in La Guajira, acting as a reference in the promotion of human rights in the region. The Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu also reflected on the disproportionate effects that conflict and displacement have on women, for what the organisation seeks to empower and capacitate indigenous women.
The last couple of years of a peace process has raised hopes for an end to the decades long conflict that has plagued Colombia. However, the negotiations between the government and the FARCs have not had a significant impact on the safety and security of human rights defenders in the country, which remains one of the countries with the highest rates of killing of HRDs in the world.
