Tanzania Community Empowerment Foundation Awards

AHEA Awards 2020
BACKGROUND TO THE APPRECIATION FOR ACTIVISTS AND HRDs IN EAST AFRICA (AHEA) AWARDS 2020

The AHEA 2020 Awards are an initiative established by a Transgender-led organization in Tanzania under its founder Ms Clara Devis, the Executive Director of Tanzania Community Empowerment Foundation (TACEF). AHEA was formerly known as The Appreciation for Tanzania Activists and East Africa (ATAEA) Awards, occurring for the first time on December 20th 2019 in Dar es Salaam. A number of categories in recognition of potential contributions of activists and HRDs were created. TACEF made efforts to collaboratively work with the community by giving the community an opportunity to nominate the right candidates for the categories and then through an online provided link, people were encouraged to vote for the nominees in order to identify the right person for each particular category from the community itself.

The AHEA Awards aim to recognize individual Activists that display "outstanding" commitment to the LGBT and Sex-workers’ community. LGBT and SW activists and HRD allies and Outstanding Donors in East Africa are among the people/Institutions that are recognized. The AHEA 2020 Awards will be held on 10th December 2020 in one of the regions to be announced once plans are settled and the organization is ready to conduct such an event.

The AHEA 2020 Awards are East African awards that aim to recognize individual LGBT+ and SW Activists, HRDs, allies and partners that display "outstanding" commitment to the LGBT and SW community. LGBT and SW activists, HRDs, allies and partners around East Africa are among the people that are recognized for awards. The awards' event is hosted and managed by the TACEF management team and The Steering Committee formed specifically to manage processes for the success of the initiative.
