Uganda: UPDATE - Human rights defender Mr Samwel Mohochi initiates legal proceedings against the Government of Ugandaposted on: 2011/07/06

Further to a Front Line urgent appeal dated 14 April 2011, Front Line has been informed of the following new information regarding the situation of human rights defender and lawyer, Mr. Samwel Mohochi:

It is reported that Mr Mohochi, a lawyer and trustee of the Kenya National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, has begun legal proceedings against the Government of Uganda at the East African Court of Justice following his deportation from Entebbe International Airport on 13 April 2011.

Further Information

Mr Mohochi is reportedly suing the Government of Uganda under Articles 6 (d) and 7 (2) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, for failing to allow him access to due process of the law or any legal or administrative process before being deported.

Mr Mohochi is allegedly seeking a declaration from the Court stating that the decision to deny him entry to Uganda was illegal on the grounds that he is a citizen of a Kenya, a member state of the East African Community.

Uganda: UPDATE- Anti Homosexuality Bill not passedposted on: 2011/05/13

The Anti - Homosexuality bill has not been passed in Uganda. The parliamentary business of the current government ended today and the bill was not discussed. As the parliament has now been officially dissolved the bill will not be passed unless re-introduced in the new parliament.

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill would severely curtail the rights and freedoms of human rights defenders in Uganda by imposing severe limitations on the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly.

Uganda: Deportation of four Kenyan human rights defenders posted on: 2011/04/14

On 13 April 2011 human rights defenders Mr Samuel Mohochi, Mr Hassan Omar Hassan, Mr Hussain Khalid, and Mr Muhdhar Khitamy were deported from Uganda, and returned to Kenya shortly after arriving at Entebbe airport. Samuel Mohochi is a trustee of the Kenya National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders; Hassan Omar Hassan is the Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR); Hussain Khalid is a member of Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI); and Muhdhar Khitamy is chairman of the Coast province branch of SUPKEM (the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims).

Uganda: Arbitrary detention of George Oundo and Kiiza Brendah and intimidation of other human rights defendersposted on: 2008/09/17

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defenders George Oundo and Kiiza Brendah were arbitrarily detained from 10 to 18 September 2008 and that Pepe Juliana Onziema, David Kato, Victor Julie Mukasa and Kasha Jacqueline have been subjected to intimidation by police and the authorities in Uganda.
