Israel / OPT: Arrest and extended detention of human rights defender, Mr Jamal Juma

On 21 December 2009, a military court in Jerusalem extended the detention period of Mr Jamal Juma for an additional four days in order to provide for interrogation. The hearing followed Jamal Juma's arrest and detention on 15 December by Israeli security forces. Jamal Juma is a well known human rights defender, and founding member of a number of Palestinian NGOs and civil society organisations. He has been the Coordinator of the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign since 2002. Read More

Nicaragua: Police harassment and detention of women rights defenders, and ill-treatment of Ms Patricia Orozco upon arrest

On 30 October 2009, women human rights defenders Ms Patricia Orozco, Ms Lorna Norori and Ms Ana Eveling Orozco, were subject to police harassment and detention in the city of León. Patricia Orozco is a journalist and leader of el Movimiento Autónomo de Mujeres de Nicaragua – MAM (the Nicaraguan Women's Autonomous Movement), a social and political NGO which works for democracy and equality. She was ill-treated upon arrest. Ana Eveling Orozco is a lawyer and also a member of MAM, while Lorna Norori is a psychologist and member of el Movimiento contra el Abuso Sexual (Movement against Sexual Abuse). Read More

Israel / OPT - UPDATE - Extension of detention period for human rights defender Mr Mohammad Othman

Front Line learned today that detained Palestinian human rights defender Mr Mohammad Othman has had his detention period extended. On 27 October 2009 an Israeli military court ruled that Mohammad Othman's detention should be extended for an additional 13 days. Mohammad Othman has so far been held in solitary confinement for 37 days. No charges or evidence have been brought against him. Read More

Front Line welcomes the release on 24 August 2009, of human rights defender, Ms Jila Baniyaghoob, on bail of approximately $200,000, after spending two months in incommunicado detention. Front Line remains deeply concerned about Jila Baniyaghoob's husband, Mr Bahaman Ahamadi Amoee, a reformist, and Ms Shiva Nazar Ahara, a blogger and a human rights activist remain in detention. Iran: Update on the situation of human rights defenders in Iran

Human rights defenders in Iran continue to face ongoing detention in exceptionally dangerous conditions, judicial prosecution and intimidation following the post-election protests of June 2009. Of the 4,000 protesters who opposed the election results who were initially arrested, most of have since been released. According to Iran's chief prosecutor, approximately 200 opposition members remain in detention, however human rights groups maintain that that number is much higher.

At least 140 individuals, including human rights defenders, politicians, journalists and bloggers, have been put on trial for charges including treason, with the prosecutor at one point asking a judge to give them "the maximum punishment." Read More
