Luz Perly Cordoba Mosquera, Secretary General of FENSUAGRO-CUT, President of the Aruaca Peasant Association (ACA) has now been in detention awaiting a trial for ten months. She was arrested the 18th February 2004 in Bogotá by members of the Administrative Department of Security (DAS), shortly after she accompanied members of the Colombia Solidarity Campaign on a human rights mission to Aruaca in February 2004. Luz Perly Cordoba Mosquera, attended the Second Front Line Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders in September 2003. Juan de Jesus Gutierrez Ardila, the treasurer with ACA was also arrested at the same time. Both human rights defenders have been charged with “rebellion” and “plotting a crime”. Front Line has been informed that Luz Perly Cordoba is also being accused of having travelled internationally, funded by and on behalf of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC. Front Line understands that the first stage of Luz Perly Cordoba’s trial is scheduled for the 5th January 2005.

Luz Perly Cordoba Mosquera, Secretary General of FENSUAGRO-CUT, an agrarian federation constituted of different trade unions, social associations and committees working for justice and social change in Colombia, has been arrested in the night of 18 February 2004 in Bogotá. Luz Perly Cordoba Mosquera, who has attended the Second Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders in September 2003, is responsible for the Human Rights department of the federation and is also the President of ACA, the Peasants Association of Arauca. On the order of the Attorney General’s office, Luz Perly Cordaba Mosquera’s arrest was followed by raids in the department of Arauca and further arrests. According to Fensuagro, about 75 peasant and agrarian leaders are currently detained.

Luz Perly Córdoba receives Peace Prize in Denmark, April 2004posted on: 2004/06/17

Denmark’s 2004 Peace Prize was awarded to Luz Perly Córdoba on Wednesday, 31st March 2004. Luz Perly was unable to receive the award in person as she remains detained in Bogotá since 18 February 2004. The award was given to a representative of Luz Perly at a ceremony in the office of Copenhagen’s Mayor Per Bregengaard in the Municipal Palace in Copenhagan.

Luz Perly Córdoba Mosquera was chosen by the Bjorneklo Committee for her outstanding role as a defender of the rights of the peasant population in Colombia. She is president of the Peasants Association of Arauca (ACA) and Secretary General of FENSUAGRO-CUT, an agrarian federation regrouping different trade unions, social associations and committees working for justice and social change in Colombia. She was arrested arbitrarily on 18 February 2004 and remains in custody in Bogotá.
