Human rights defender Mr Alexei Sokolov was beaten while being held at Novosibirsk prison. Alexei Sokolov is the chairman of Pravovaja Osnova (Legal Foundation), an NGO which works to defends the rights of prisoners. Throughout his career, he has repeatedly denounced the use of torture by the Russian police. Alexei Sokolov is also a member of a civic supervisory committee on places of detention appointed by the Russian Parliament.
