On 9 May 2013, human rights defender Mr Jérémie Safari was released from police custody where he had spent more than 24 hours being subjected to physical and sexual assault. The human rights defender's ordeal came just two days after his colleague, Mr Joseph Saidi, had spent three days at another detention center where he reports being subjected to similar ill treatment.
Human rights defender Mr Sulaiman Bin Jasim was released on bail on 21 April 2013, four days after he was arrested by Kuwaiti police for documenting and monitoring a protest in the Al Andalus area of Kuwait City. The human rights defender faces charges of attending an "illegal gathering".
On 20 April 2013, human rights defenders from the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People 'LGBT United' and the Coalition for Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities were attacked by seven unknown persons in the city of Bitola, while putting up posters advocating for the human rights of LGBTI people and marching peacefully carrying a rainbow flag.
On 13 March 2013, a broad coalition of human rights organisations called for UN free speech and human rights watchdogs to intervene and secure the immediate release of Vietnamese blogger and human rights activist Le Quoc Quan.
On 1 November 2012, human rights defender Ms Aminatou Haidar was physically and verbally attacked and threatened with a knife by Moroccan police in El Ayoun in a four hour long assault that left her car damaged.
Front Line is gravely concerned for the physical and psychological integrity of human rights defender Mr Azimjan Askarov who was beaten, along with other defendants after an appeal hearing at Nooken Regional Court on 5 November 2010.
Human rights defender Mr Mohammed al-Tahleel was briefly abducted and severely beaten by Moroccan security forces in Al-Laayoun city, Western Sahara on 21 August 2009. Mohammed al-Tahleel, is the head of the Bu-Jdur branch of the Sahrawi Association of Victims of Grave Human Rights Violations (ASVDH).
Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender, Mr Arshaluys Hakobyan, was arrested and beaten in Kentron District Police Department, Yerevan, on 5 June 2009. Arshaluys Hakobyan is a member of the human rights organisation, Helsinki Association, and the press photographer for their official web site.
