Persecution of Human Rights Defenders continues across the Occupied Palestinian Territoriesposted on: 2006/10/11

Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court revealed on 3 October 2006 that police lied while testifying against 11 human rights defenders accused of violent acts while demonstrating against the West Bank Wall.

The court acquitted the activists and the Judge in his ruling said: ‘A feeling of serious discomfort has arisen from the mighty gap between the officers testimony and what is seen in the video tapes,’ he said. ‘I cannot rule out the possibility that had it not been for the videotapes, I would have reached a different result regarding the defendants.’

Front Line is extremely concerned about the ongoing detention without trial of three Palestinian human rights defenders, Ziyad Hmeidan, Hassan Zaga and Ahmad Abu Hannye. They are being held on the basis of secret testimony from security forces, which the defenders and their lawyers are prevented from hearing or challenging in court.

Ziyad Hmeidan, a fieldworker with the West Bank human rights organization al Haq has been in administrative detention since 23 of May 2005. A series of extensions to his detention have been ordered since this date.

Protect the People of Darfur - solidarity action by Irish Non-Governmental Organisations

To mark the international day of solidarity for the people of Darfur, a coalition of Irish and Sudanese organisations will be taking part in a solidarity event at 1pm in Dublin this Friday 15th September with the Lord Mayor of Dublin Cllr Vincent Jackson.

Despite the signing of a Darfur peace agreement on 5 May 2006, the violence in western Sudan has continued to escalate. While attention on Darfur is waning, people are still being killed, raped and displaced from their homes everyday. Since 2003, Darfur in western Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict. 85,000 civilians have been killed and more than 200,000 have died from war related causes. More than two million people have been displaced and live in displaced-persons camps in Darfur or in refugee camps in Chad; more than 3.5 million people are reliant on international aid for survival. The violence in Darfur is escalating. Civilians are in danger of being killed, raped and forcibly displaced now.

Human rights lawyer, and UAE University Law professor Dr Mohammed al-Roken has been arrested twice in the last three months. In July he was held in custody for one night after he gave an interview to an Arab television about the recent war in Lebanon.

A conference on women’s rights and democracy planned by the organisation to take place in September last year was banned by the authorities with no explanation given
