In 2008 Front Line made 152 grants totaling €301,253 to individual human rights defenders and organizations in 42 countries throughout the world. Unfortunately threats against human rights defenders are increasing and the need to provide support is growing.

Our 2009 Small Grants budget is €300,000. We need your help to continue to support at-risk human rights defenders through this crucial progamme.

100% of your donation to The Protection Fund for Human Rights Defenders at Risk will go directly to protect human rights defenders who routinely face death threats, illegal prosecution, imprisonment, violence, and defamation as a result of their non-violent human rights work on behalf of others. "The grant helped me get protection and you can’t belief it. It actually strengthened my desire, devotion and commitment to fighting for human rights and democratic change.....I feel protected where I am but also feel protected by virtue of my association with Front Line, knowing that in the event that my life is under threat over the land project then I have some group to help me out. Front Line is frontlife". Kenyan human rights defender Ken Wafula.

An example of how Front Line helps to protect Human Rights Defenders:

India – Bachpan Bachao Andolan

“The new security measures have greatly reduced staffs fear of another attack”. The Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) works to end bonded child labour and to ensure that all children are free from exploitation and receive free and quality education. Their strategies include secret raid and rescue operations and legal intervention to liberate children in bonded labour. They also have three residential centres for the rehabilitation and education of children rescued from bonded labour.

One of the residential rehabilitation centers, the Mukti Ashram has been attacked on two separate occasions by mobs of factory owners. Both times the human rights activists thwarted the attacks, standing up to the attackers with great courage, till the police arrived. Front Line provided the BBA with a security grant with which they installed CCTV cameras in their Delhi offices and they extended the boundary wall and fence at the Mukti Ashram. The new security measures have greatly reduced staffs fear of another attack.
